Multiplayer 4x is the tiniest of tiny niches. Absolutely none.įor every one multiplayer game that manages to survive more than half an hour, there are tens or hundreds of thousands of single player games that go to completion. Or maybe some game about colonization of the planets - like civilization beyond earth. Do you know how many have finished? Zero. What is the best lesser-known4x space game: StarDrive, StarDrive2, Distant Worlds, Distant Worlds 2, Stars in Shadow, Remnants of the Precursors, Polaris Secrtor. Do you know how many games of HoMM, Civ, AoW, etc., over the decades I have started with friends? Hint: a lot. There are a non-zero number of people whom can manage to make it work. Get the right people together and you can have a lot of fun playing a turn based 4X game.Ĭonsider yourself lucky, the only people i know are impatient, rushers that want to win as fast as possible, if a game lasts 5mins or longer, they get bored. You may not believe this, but my friends and I actually managed to complete 2 games of Civilization V on normal speed and medium map settings, and got fairly far in a few more. Zero is literally just one person, I'm happy he focused on the core game. Stardrive 2 features a mix of turn based. Starting with a single planet and a small number of space-worthy vessels, players forge out into the galaxy: exploring space, colonizing planets, negotiating with aliens and fighting enemies. Now, StarDrive 2 seems like a no-brainer for me, game is stable and getting good reviews, however Star Ruler 2 has kept my attention for a while due to all the new stuff it's bringing to the 4X table. StarDrive 2 is a 4X strategy game under development by Zero Sum Games where the goal is to build a space empire. My current favourites seem to be Civ5 and Endless Legend. If it eventually happens, fine, if not, fine. I've recently gotten into the 4X genre and loving the experience. I don't know if there are plans for multiplayer anything, and frankly I don't really care. Ditch the campaign, design ships, spend X amount, and fight. It would be functionally similar to Total War multiplayer battles. Play by email is really the only way it can work, but not many people are into that.Īll that being said, I think StarDrive 2 COULD have some really cool multiplayer in the form of the battle arena. No way will you ever be able to get a group of people together to do a 30, 60, or 90+ hour campaign. It becomes a terrible RTS-wannabe at that point. Games that do manage it make do with tiny rush maps and with rules like auto-resolve all combat. Originally posted by PrawnWonton:Multiplayer and 4x just don't go together.
